Ethiopia to Tanzania

After a rough time at altitude, we were all ready to leave Addis Ababa. None of us slept well, waking up many times at night and unable to fall back asleep. We made our way back to the airport and had some trouble checking in. Maybe it was our complicated itinerary! Off we went:

I wasn’t impressed by the food on Ethiopian Air.  Neither was Josephine, and the poor thing was still sick from altitude. But it was a short flight with amazing views of Kilimanjaro on the way:

It was a relief to land, and the air was so fresh!

Thank goodness we got our visas in Ottawa before leaving. The lineup for visas on arrival was huge! We met up with our driver and had a 3.5 hour drive to Rhotia Valley Children’s Home and Tented Lodge. These plants reminded me of the yucca plant that my mom grows, but up to about 4 metres tall:

Josephine and Isabelle slept most of the way, thank goodness! We passed through some Maasai villages and then started up the hill to the lodge. We arrived in time for dinner:

We then went straight to our beds, warmed by hot water bottles. What a treat! It has been down to about 10 C at night and we snuggled into our cozy beds.

We slept better, and today we plan to visit with the children living on the adjacent hill.
