Newark/New York, nice to see you again!
All went well for our first flight from Ottawa to Newark. We did get a little confused about how to walk from the terminal to our hotel. Turns out you can’t! It’s a very car-focussed road network, but with a quick dash across a couple of lanes of traffic, we made it. The parking lot attendants assured us that they see lots of pilots pulling the same maneuver.
It was a good little breakfast, then we hopped in the subway to walk the Highline Park:
The park is built on a former train line and is filled with all sorts of vegetation and benches. It was awfully hot, so we didn’t stay too long. Descending to the subway again, we headed farther south and exited into the Oculus. It’s a very cool structure that I was sure Josephine would love to photograph! It’s also adjacent to the 9/11 Memorial, and we stepped outside to pay a quick visit.

At that point we were pretty hot and tired, and we took a train back to Newark Penn station, then an Uber to the hotel. This driver was so much better! After showers and some takeout sushi, we crashed at 5pm to try and start acclimating to the time in Singapore. It was a pretty good sleep, and Josephine was grateful for so much time in bed.
I was so grateful that the hotel slowed us to check in at 8am! That gave us a good space to drop our bags and change into shorts. Also to try and figure out the eSIM data plan that we bought. It wasn’t working well! Then we took an Uber into Manhattan. Not my favourite driver 😬
Once there, we first checked out Tom’s Restaurant, famous as the outside of the diner on Seinfeld, and in the Suzanne Vega song:
