Chicago at High speed

So today we did Chicago. 

Sears Tower, hot dogs, the bean, the flamingo, and the girls were DONE. Us to really. 

We dropped off our bags at the hotel concierge and got on the blue line into the city. Nice folks on the train was an added bonus. 

First we stopped at the flamingo to pose with it. 



Then a few blocks to the {Bruce}Wills Tower (it used to be called the Sears Tower). The sky was overcast and we couldn’t see the top. Maybe visibility was better higher up?





Turns out that was a hard “no”. Visibility was about 100m. But going up a tower into the clouds is pretty awesome anyways. If you look closely you can see we’re laying down in a glass floor and the building fades into the clouds below us. 






Thanks to the miracle of modern technology called “wallpaper” it almost looks like t was a clear day in this photo. 



Bus stop ads and signs everywhere tell us that ketchup on a hotdog is sacralidge. So Caitlin got the usual chi-dog at Max’s instead of the usual tourist traps. Good research by my internet crawler (Caitlin) pays off!  It’s basically yellow mustard, tomato wedges, pickles ‘fingerling’ mildly hot peppers, raw diced onion, something green and a really good “Vienna Beef” wiener. The wiener is really what makes it. 



Josephine didn’t want to get interrupted. She was bold and brave and asked for ketchup only. 



Isabelle had ketchup and mustard. 



I had a real deal like Caitlin. But it didn’t survive long enough to be photographed.

Ok this is amazing. It’s called “The Bean”. 10m tall metallic jelly bean thing. It was starting to rain so perhaps 50-100 people were hiding underneath. We did not. ;)




We went back to the airport/hotel shortly afterwards. I had a shower in the fitness centre for the sake of those whom I’ll be traveling with for the next 24-38 hours   

Then we arrived at check in for Turkish Airlines Flighht #6 to Isatanbul. The inbound (THY5) is 4 hours late, ours (THY6) is 1 hour late. Making our 2 hour connection to Addis Ababa in IST very tight. I’m going to ask about holding our connecting flight to ADD once their desk opens. Meanwhile the family is cozied up for some downtime in the only place that makes sense. ;)




Update at 23:15pm

We are on board and livin the life. We may not make our connection to Addis. But that’s a problem for another day!

Cultural Thoughts

Turkey: Istanbul was a culturally varied, welcoming place. At restaurants, the hustle performed by the servers waiting at the street was intense. Everyone wanted your business! At our first restaurant, the server proclaimed that he loved Canada and that his girlfriend was from there, but he couldn’t name the city she was from. 😂 Other vendors played a similar game, trying to engage you in conversation. The easiest approach was to ignore them, unfortunately.  Most places tell you not to flush toilet paper, but to instead put it in a small waste bin. Smoking is MUCH more common than at home, and we are very unused to smoke at restaurants.  Lots of seagulls and hooded crows were to be seen around town.  Greece : The restaurant service flow was a little different from in North America. Whirlwind Melbourne

After a lovely sleep (well, I woke at 5:30, but that’s just me), we headed out to explore a bit of Melbourne. Breakfast was at a tiny coffee shop and the girls loved their hot chocolate.  The cafe was in a narrow alley typical of the Melbourne CBD.  It must have been some breakfast to make a sign about it! Next up was the National Gallery of Victoria. It was free! Unfortunately everyone was tired at this point.  But Isabelle still managed to climb a tree! Poor JL.  Such a pretty city: Then it was back to the airport! We had a TON of time to kill, first at the Singapore Airlines lounge. They close in between flights, so we snuck a few minutes in the Air New Zealand lounge: Once boarded, the girls slept pretty much right away while JL and I had our preselected meals. I had a lovely barramundi.  We’ve now arrived in Singapore and are waiting to board our flight to London. This one’s a monster 13.5 hour flight! See you on the other side.

Second Day in Wellington

After another lovely breakfast, we took a walk up Mount Victoria to find a couple of the Lord of the Rings filming locations: Next up was a visit to the Weta Workshop where they make special effects for lots of movies. Unfortunately, photos inside were forbidden, but it was really cool to handle actual prop swords and helmets used in the films.  Watch out, JL!!!
